How to Prevent Illness and Strengthen Your Body

With so many people getting “sick” recently I thought this would be great information to share so you better understand how to prevent illness and strengthen your body. It is important to understand that your body is constantly under attack from foreign invaders such as environmental toxins, pollutants, bacteria, germs and viruses.

Your immune system is your body’s natural defense against these attackers.

The immune system is made up of organs, structures and white blood cells whose job it is to identify and destroy disease causing organisms such as:

  • bacteria
  • viruses
  • fungi
  • parasites
  • and even the body’s own cells that have malfunctioned.

What Controls the Immune System?

The brain and nervous system controls & regulates the immune system both directly and indirectly. The direct effect is via the synapsing of neurons with white blood cells in lymphoid tissues, while the indirect effect is through blood-borne neurotransmitters and hormones, which activate receptors on the white blood cells surface.

Substantial research has clearly demonstrated that a wide range of stress can deplete immune system resources and adversely affect neurological and biological communication resulting in abnormal levels of B and T cells, decreased responsiveness of natural killer cells, and fewer IgA antibodies to be secreted in the saliva.

What does that mean to you?

It means that you are more likely to get “sick” because your body has a lower ability to fight of infection and your weakened immune system is overwhelmed. That is why subluxation is so dangerous and devastating to your health because it directly interferes with nervous system function.

Can Issues With Your Spine Cause You To Get Sick?

The simple answer is, yes!

In order to understand the devastating effects of a Vertebral Subluxation and the Power of a Chiropractic Adjustment, you must understand adaptive physiology.

Adaptive Physiology Explained

When your body goes into a “Fight or Flight” response due to a stressor (bear jumping out at you, hearing about a tragedy, etc.), your body will respond accordingly. The first thing that happens is that your blood pressure, heart rate, blood clotting factors, blood fat, LDL cholesterol, insulin, and glucose go UP so you can adapt to your environment adequately. Your cell-mediated immune system weakens, and that reduces your sex hormone binding globulin resulting in a higher level of circulating sex hormones in your blood.

This leads to cancers, colds, influenza, and other infections.

The #1 risk factor in determining whether or not you will get a site-specific cancer is by the amount of sex hormones you have in your blood.

Your body decreases serotonin which down regulates learning and up regulates anxiety and fear centers in brain so you can react to the stressor more effectively; however, this leads to increased anxiety, fear, depression, and learning and attention deficits. This response is called adaptive physiology.

Movement of the Spine creates stimulation of proprioceptors in the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and discs. Proprioception and mechanoreception are essential nutrients for balance and health of the brain and the entire mind and body.

When a human has a Vertebral Subluxation, proprioception is diminished which is recognized by the body as a Stressor eliciting the stress response, putting the body into adaptive physiology. If it is not removed it stays there chronically.

Adaptive Physiology and Chronic Illness

If you look at over 95% of chronic illnesses, they are all the result of chronic adaptive physiology due to a stressor:

  • cancer
  • diabetes
  • chronic pain
  • obesity
  • heart disease
  • fatigue
  • depression
  • infertility
  • decreased libido
  • insomnia
  • acid reflux
  • constipation
  • auto-immune issues
  • Alzheimer’s
  • dementia
  • etc.

That is how Subluxation causes you to get sick and why is it so important to look to the spine for the cause of disease!

You Can Be Sick Even When You Don’t Look or Feel Sick

All of the studies show that subluxation affects your health from the inside out, despite how you look and feel. This was proven in the following studies:

When Immobilization occurs (Subluxation) in a joint and remains there for more than 10-15 days, that joint begins to degenerate. ~ Tapio Videman, M.D. published in Clinical Biomechanics 1987

Participants with hyperkyphotic (hunched over) posture had a significant, 2.4 times greater rate of death. ~ A prospective study from The Journal of American Geriatrics Society

Reversing or stopping hyperkyphosis equals reversing or stopping death – according to the medical data!

The conclusion of one of the most prominent up to date studies proving what Subluxation is and does and that is not associated with pain most of the time, was a study out of Clinical Neurophysiology in 2007. This study proved that areas of reduced or restricted spinal motion causes spinal degeneration and changes in neurological communication between the brain and body are medically a fact and termed the Vertebral Subluxation Complex by Chiropractors.

The study revealed that Vertebral Subluxation can be present without pain or with pain and getting rid of them requires a professional trained in detecting and correcting them much like a dentist does with symptomatic or asymptomatic cavities. Preventing them requires improving spinal range of motion and specific postural exercises in conjunction with regular chiropractic corrective care!

Additional studies show that even a single adjustment can boost the immune system by 200% or more and that regular corrective adjustments raise immune function by as much as 48% over the long term. These facts and many more further prove the importance of lifetime chiropractic care.

Here in our office we take that even further with the 5 Essentials of Max Living. This is why when you feel you are getting sick, are more stressed, are busier, feeling overwhelmed or not at your best it is essential to come in for more adjustments NOT LESS.
