Ear Infection Care in Rocklin
Tugging at the ear. Crying at bedtime. A fever that shows up out of nowhere. Ear infections are one of the most common reasons parents bring young kids to the doctor, and when they keep coming back, it can wear on the whole family.
Why Little Ears Trap Fluid So Easily
Most childhood ear infections are middle ear infections, known as acute otitis media. They happen when fluid builds up behind the eardrum, often after a cold, and becomes infected. Young children are more prone because their eustachian tubes (the small channels that drain the middle ear) are shorter and flatter than an adult’s, a bit like a sink pipe with almost no slope.
Colds, Daycare, and Other Common Triggers
A few factors make ear infections more likely.
- Colds and other respiratory infections
- Seasonal allergies that cause congestion
- Exposure to cigarette smoke
- Bottle-feeding while lying flat
- Pacifier use past infancy
- Group childcare, where germs spread quickly
What Ear Pain Looks Like in a Child Who Can’t Explain It
Older kids might tell you their ear hurts. Babies and toddlers usually show you instead, by pulling at an ear, crying more when lying down, or refusing to eat because sucking and chewing hurt.
You may also notice fever, restless sleep, extra fussiness, trouble hearing quiet sounds, or fluid draining from the ear.
When to Call the Doctor Right Away
Ear infections need a medical diagnosis, and some require antibiotics, so see your pediatrician if you suspect an infection. Seek urgent care for any fever in a baby under three months, a fever of 102°F or higher, severe pain, swelling or redness behind the ear, a stiff neck, or unusual drowsiness.
A Gentle Look at the Neck, Jaw, and Head Position
Chiropractic care doesn’t treat ear infections, and it never replaces your pediatrician. At New Life Chiropractic, we can assess how comfortably your child’s neck, upper back, and jaw move, since tension in these areas may affect overall comfort.
Your visit begins with a detailed health history, including how often infections happen and what your pediatrician has recommended. Then Dr. Catherine Smith or one of our doctors will gently check your child’s posture and movement. We adapt techniques to your child’s age and size, using light, precise pressure.
If your child feels unsure, we slow down. Toys, a play area, and a friendly team help each visit feel easy. We’ll also share simple home tips, like feeding babies in a more upright position, regular handwashing, and keeping kids away from smoke.
Comfortable Kids Between Colds and Checkups
Our goal is to help your child feel more comfortable and move more freely as part of their overall wellness plan. Some parents tell us their child seems more relaxed and sleeps better. Healthy habits at home, paired with regular pediatric care, give your child a strong foundation during cold and flu season.
